BT and Virgin Cybersquatting Abuse
In the case of British Telecommunications v One in Million Ltd, the defendants had registered domain names for a number of household names, including BT (BT.com) and Virgin (Virgin.co.uk). The defendant had contacted BT instructing them that if they didn't purchase the domain name, it would be sold to someone else.
As British Telecommunications owned the "BT" trade mark and because the defendant had threatened to sell to the domain names (possibly to a competitor or to an adult-content website) the courts ruled in BT's favour.
